Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Art materials are resources that span and connect students in a colorful and exciting way across many curriculum. My second graders use their art as the basis for narrative story writing, which reflects what they have learned in language arts, writing, social studies and science.

My students are second graders from a densely populated suburban community in So.

California. They are enthusiastic learners who particularly love "doing art"! Our school is Title 1, and the majority of the students are first generation children born to immigrated parents from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Vietnam and India. Our students rely on instruction that is heavily imbued with realia, and illustrative resources for comprehension and language development.

My Project

My second graders will be using the chalk and oil pastels for projects related to our in class art curriculum, and extensions to writing, literacy and social studies as well. My students are learning about the elements of art, as well as what elements the masters used in their works. During art class, students are instructed to create their own version of that artist's style, and having such resources as oil and chalk pastels would enable them to become familiar with how to use various mediums in art, and create more vibrant pieces of art.

Your donation to this project will give my students the opportunity to learn how to use diverse art mediums to create projects that will stimulate their imagination, which in turn, promotes oral language between students and more creative writing when used as a basis for their storytelling.

When students are limited in their language proficiency, which my second graders are, being able to express themselves through art becomes very important. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
