This is my second year as a teacher and I truly love it! I teach the 3rd grade in Chicago and have 18 amazing students in my class. Our school was founded to help the immigrant community, so my students have very diverse backgrounds and experiences. We come from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Belize, China, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Puerto Rico and Vietnam. Nearly half of my students speak English as their second language; I also have 4 students who receive special education services, two diagnosed with ADHD and several with social-emotional issues. My students really struggle in the subject area of reading and read at a wide variety of reading levels. I have students in the 3rd grade who read at a Kindergarten level, most read at about a second grade level and a few who read at a fourth or fifth grade level. However, when my students have books that are written at their individual reading level they are able to understand what they are reading and are so much more engaged and interested in learning! I am writing this proposal to ask for books for my classroom that will help my students research for one of our huge social studies projects! The project is one of my favorite things about our school and called Passport Through Passages (Passages is the name of our school!). First, the school chooses a continent to study. Second, each classroom at our school chooses a country from that continent to study. Finally, during our special Passport Through Passages day each classroom presents what they have learned about their country to other classes, parents and community members. It is an amazing day to see the students teaching others what they have learned about their country. This spring our school is studying the continent of Asia and our class will study Japan. One of my goals is that the students create interactive presentations for their peers to participate in. For example, I will most likely break my classroom into four different groups to study the Geography, Politics, Economy and Culture of Japan. Each group will be responsible for creating a short interactive presentation for their peers. The Geography group may create a large map and quiz show, the Economy group could organize a market and "sell" Japanese goods, the Culture group could cook a popular snack from Japan and the Politics group may present a skit. The projects and presentations are student-choice as much as possible. As the teacher, I have found it incredibly challenging this year to find enough books written at their reading levels. When my students have non-fiction books that ARE written at their reading level, they are so much more interested and engaged in the learning process because they can research independently or in small groups! They are always so excited to share a fact that they were able to find in a book that was written at their reading level! My students have the opportunity to check a book out of our classroom library every day, so these books would also be taken home and shared with family and friends! These books and materials will generate excitement about Japan and reading for many others outside of our classroom! These resources would be so great to have in our classroom! They will help actively engage my students in their study of Japan! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my proposal!
