Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
An author named W.H. Auden once said, "a poet, is before anything else, a person who is passionately in love with language." It is my strong desire to turn my second grade students into young poets. I am an excited and motivated 2nd year educator. There are 393 students enrolled at our school. Currently 68% of our students are low-income and we have limited funding for new materials. This devastates me because there are so many intelligent minds at the school that just need resources to motivate and encourage them to become poets themselves!
The students I teach come from diverse backgrounds with minimal life experiences other than what I can provide for them. As a second year teacher, I have limited resources to provide reading materials to stimulate their thinking. My 22 students have shown an strong interest in poetry, especially by authors such as Dr. Suess and Shel Silverstein. Unfortunately, the poetry portion of my classroom library is non-existent. My students want to become writers themselves and are constantly attempting to write their own poetry. However, I do not have books to model the art of poetry.
I am asking, begging, pleading for your help. PLEASE help me expand my library by helping me add poetry books. I want to provide materials that will encourage a love of language. To promote a lifelong love of reading and learning, it is crucial that these students develop an early and positive experience with libraries, literature, poetry, and reading.
I hope that by providing poetry books, it will help my students become poets themselves. After all, poetry is a form of beauty and a great outlet for self-expression. I would be sincerely appreciative if you would help me in this venture!
