Children of today are fighting high obesity rates. In order to improve our children's health, we need to get them excited about exercise and nutrition! My students live in a high poverty area where school budgets have been cut drastically, which means that I have over-sized Physical Education classes.
My students are rambunctious preteens in an urban, poverty-stricken area of New York City.
They need physical activity not only for their overall health, but to alleviate their high energy levels. With the proper equipment, we can help motivate them to become lifelong learners of health and fitness.
My Project
Our after-school soccer team is in it's first year of development with limited equipment. More equipment would mean more practicing time for each player. If we had more soccer balls and goals, we could play more games with less students on each team.
Practice makes perfect!
Players are more motivated to practice when they have their own equipment than when they have to share. My players can design their own basic soccer drills to improve each player's ability to control the ball while dribbling. I believe that if the team had more soccer balls, they would enhance their skill level by creating more lead up drills and games. Players could play break up into teams of 4 with no goalie and focus on dribbling and passing the ball to each other.
These soccer balls and goals would have a huge impact on our team's ability to play a more skilled game rather than just a bunch of kids running around after 1 or 2 soccer balls.
