Partner With Me in Educating Children with Autism

My students need alphabet activity and letter sound matching boards to be able to learn their letters and sounds. The CD Boombox will be used for listening to recorded books.

My Students

“We are not what we know but what we are willing to learn.” – Mary Catherine Bateso. My students are very energetic and my biggest challenge is how to make them sit and focus but these kids are very eager to learn everyday. Some of them are just discovering the beauty of books, letters and numbers.

I handle 6 children with autism ranging from Transitional Kinder to 2nd grade.

They are all diagnosed with autism. They are very tactile, have lots of energy and need to move around after every activity. My students love to learn. They marvel at new things that they discover and learn everyday. They try their very best to sit, listen and focus even for a short time. I have a great working relationship with their families and they are very involved in their children's education. I work for a Blue ribbon school in Gardena. It is a general education campus with a few classes for special needs children. The teachers and administrators support and respect my students just like their own children and not really minding whatever their eligibility's are.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will help my students in various ways. The alphabet and vocabulary folder games will introduce the students to the world of reading by helping them develop and enhance their vocabulary through visuals, learn the letters and their sounds at the same time learning the formation of letters with the use of the alphabet construction set. The Boombox will help students move and groove to the music while doing Physical Education and exercising to take out some of their energies, it will also be used as a listening center to make them experience books on Cd's. The lap pads, tangly toys, silly sensory and pompom balls will be used to help them learn to sit and focus on the lessons being taught to them while having appropriate fidget toys. Handwriting without tears books will be used to help the students develop writing skills to be able to write letters, numbers, words and sentences.

If my project gets funded, my students will be able to experience literacy through games and music.

It will enhance their letters, numbers and vocabulary skills. It will help them focus more on the lessons being taught with the help of the sensory materials. The materials will help them learn pre-writing/writing skills that will prepare them in learning basic skills such as writing their names and spelling words or writing sentences.
