Partner Adapted Physical Education

Help me give my students physical education equipment that can elevate our classroom opportunities. Equipment wishes include items that can help adapt activities that we already do so that everyone can participate and reach their fitness goals.

My Students

While I am relatively new to this High School, this is a true community. Many of the students have parents who went here, grandparents even. I love that my students are always willing to try new things, that they are so curious, and always asking questions.

My Project

This year, I have started a new course which allows students who have excelled in Physical Education 1 to be part of an advanced PE course that pairs them with a student with special needs here at school. Having equipment that will allow me to adapt our Physical Education activities will ensure that each student has the opportunity to succeed and to learn and grow.

This opportunity supports a greater level of inclusion in our schools and in physical education.

Our students learn empathy, patience, understanding and differences and similarities between them, as we play and enjoy sports and physical activity together.

Some examples of equipment that help adapt our activities are beach balls, which allow us to learn the basics of volleyball with balls that float longer and are larger and easier to hit and softer on the arms. Access to pedometers would allow students to simply understand movement and set goals for movement during the day and during the class period. Fitness cards give us a visual representation of exercise opportunities and can be used to "gameify" our fitness so that we see the joy in fitness activity and doing it with our peers. Indoor soccer nets will allow us to participate in soccer activities despite weather/field accessibility.

It is my hope that we can continue building an equipment room that will make every sport and activity accessible to all of our students.
