Parkitecture: Building Safe Spaces to Play

Help me give my students construction sets to become architects and structural, mechanical, and materials engineers. They will cooperatively design, redesign and create models of next generation safe playground equipment while demonstrating Newton's Laws of Motion.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Glenn's classroom raised $752

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach a dynamic group of fifth-grade learners who are full of curiosity and energy. They love building, experimenting, and solving real problems together. These students thrive in collaborative learning environments where they can explore concepts through hands-on activities and creative thinking. I tore apart my husband's drill to show them how motors work; they were in awe!

Erector Sets provide the most realistic engineering tool with nuts, bolts, and beams that the students can test moving parts and demonstrate force and motion.

Last year students used LEGOs-which allow for creativity but, don't mimic real-world engineering tasks. These sets provide the perfect bridge between theory and practice, especially for a project rooted in Newton’s Laws of Motion and structural safety.

My goals for this project are to:

1. Explore Newton’s Laws of Motion through interactive lessons.

2. Form five small cooperative teams, each with access to one erector set.

3. Design and build scaled-down prototypes of safe playground equipment.

4. Test their models for strength, motion, and balance—making adjustments using real data and feedback.

5. Present their final designs, supported by their physical models, to a mock city council panel of teachers, parents, and peers.

Each group will tackle real-world questions like: How does friction affect the speed of a slide? How do forces interact on a seesaw? How can we ensure stability and safety in a climbing structure.

These five erector sets will make a huge impact—not just for this project, but for all future STEM challenges in our classroom.
