Parents Help Grow School Vegetables PLUS Our Vertical Garden Experiment!

My students need a vertical composting container garden, garden labels, and erasers so we can compare traditional gardening to vertical gardening.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Kugelman's classroom raised $602

My Students

I teach twenty-seven happy and excited to learn third graders, and all day long we have fun growing and thinking, and trying our best. Our school has a garden and our students are just beginning to prepare our garden bed for a spring planting.

We are a wonderful multicultural community located in Los Angeles, and we have students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Over 35% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast daily.

This project is inspired by a teacher who invited families from his classroom to garden at school. I love the idea that we can use traditional gardening techniques taught to our students by parents at our garden bed. We are going to have a science project where we plant the same vegetables to compare traditional gardening to vertical gardening!

My Project

We will learn about vertical gardening and then compare vertical gardening with an old fashioned traditional garden bed. We will be planting the same seeds for the vertical garden and for the garden bed. We will use the traditional farming techniques that the parents teach us. We have parents from many different countries, many who had traditional gardens in their native homeland. This project will help the students honor their parents and have pride that their English speaking parents and their non-English speaking parents are knowledgeable about gardening and can share their knowledge with our class.

I will research and learn about vertical gardening and become the vertical gardening expert, and the parents will be the traditional garden bed expert.

I have requested a vertical garden, garden labels, and erasers. Parents will work with their children to prepare the traditional bed soil and plant the seeds. I will work with the parents and the students to teach how to use vertical gardening and set up our vertical garden.

The importance of teaching about vertical gardening is that this is an alternative to traditional gardening. It uses a lot less land, and since many of my high poverty students live in apartments, learning about vertical gardening gives them information on how they can incorporate vertical gardening where they live on their small patio or porch.

We will monitor the two types of gardening style weekly, taking photos and measuring. For our culminating project, we will have a blind taste test to see what veggies taste best - vertically grown or traditionally grown. We will have a feast that the families, students, and myself will attend. This will start a great tradition at our school. Getting parents of all students involved - through gardening! What a great idea - thank you Joel!
