Parents As Teachers!

My students need 10 reusable take-home activity packs in Spanish that will enable their parents to be teachers, too!

I teach kindergarten in a high-needs community. Our school serves a large population of students who speak Spanish as a first language. After sending out a parent survey to my Spanish speaking parents, I found that many of them desire to assist their children at home. However, they do not have access to materials in Spanish, and the materials that I have need to be kept for use at school. They do their best to ensure that their children have the parental support that they desperately need, but the lack of materials has been quite the challenge. Take-home packs are backpacks that include books, hands-on manipulatives, and instructions in Spanish. Parents will check out a pack and keep it at home for 2-3 days. After they finish, they will return the pack and will receive another one. The packs will rotate through interested families and can be reused many times. Parents will have the ability to work with their children to develop skills and concepts such as alphabet, shapes, positional language, counting, music, etc. The more developed a child is in their home language, the more ready they are to explore and grow in a second language! Funding this project is much more than just providing materials. It is empowering parents to support their children academically in their home language. Everyone wins when families are unified, younger siblings have early access to academics in their home language, and the teacher is able to bridge the gap between home and school. These materials will give students the opportunity to gain critical knowledge in their native language that will support them as they interact in our school's culture of English.
