Simply Put: Great books in the homes of delayed kids.
My Students: I teach 10 Developmentally Delayed Preschool students(ages 3 and 4 years). The homes of my students have varying levels of economic stability and parent education. In one family a single-parent mom has completed 9th grade. This parent struggles to read beyond the 6th grade level. In another family the mother is an attorney and the father is a pediatrician. Four students are from multi-lingual homes. I work with a great variety of family situations, but all of the students' parents want to help their child progress.
My Goal: I want to provide each of my students with a few developmentally and age-appropriate books to start or add to home libraries. If all my students had some of the same books at home, I would also be able to read these books at school while parents read the same book at home. This would make for a great opportunity to carry over skills and language from school to home. Before giving books to families I would like to offer mini-workshops to my parents discussing the importance of reading in helping children develop language, cognitive and early literacy skills.
Specifics: 6 books for 10 kids which is 60 books. Some of these books have very simple texts which encourage naming pictures. Some are about counting and animals, vehicles and families. The books which have story lines are short and have repetitive texts. Some books in this collection celebrate cultural diversity.
Why: There are so many wonderful books available, but many parents don't know how to select a book that is appropriate for their child's ability, interest and attention span.
Other Factors: Ours is a small community. There is no bookstore in town that carries children's books. Our only local source is Wal-Mart, which has a limited selection.
My Contribution: I will invite all my parents to two mini-workshops at which I will discuss ways to make book time at home fun and educational. I will discuss how to select good books to read and how to use books to help children develop vocabularies and other skills. I will demonstrate ways to read to children using voice inflection and questions to peak interest. And I will follow up with students to see if parents are reading at home.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
