it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How many times have a called a parent and heard: "You have the wrong number"? If the phone line isn't disconnected, this is the response I receive when I try to contact the parents of my students to talk to them about their child's progress.
I teach 5th grade students at a Title I school where 95% or more of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
My students come to me with a variety of reading levels from English Language Learners, to gifted students, to students reading well below grade level. My students come from a high poverty community in which most of the parents have to work multiple jobs to support their families. These work schedules often make it difficult to reach parents for discussion about student progress.
My Project
As a teacher, it is part of my job to effectively communicate with parents on their child's academic progress. I strongly believe that there is a direct relationship between a student's academic performance and communication with their parent. In an effort to help my students succeed and increase parent involvement with their education, I am requesting materials to create parent communication take home folders. My students need file fastener folders and address labels in order to create data folders for parent communication. These folders will be sent home weekly with updates on student progress, such as test scores from the week and areas for improvement. This will help parents with busy work schedules stay up to date with their students' academic achievement and needs.
A parent-teacher partnership is the best way to help students succeed in their education.
These parent communication folders will eliminate the barrier posed by parent work schedules and disconnected phone lines and allow for increased communication between school and home.
