This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am thrilled to be teaching AP World History again! AP World History provides us with an opportunity to dig deep and think critically. While the history taught revolves around primary sources, good historical fiction is a wonderful way to make primary sources, dates, periodization, and contextualization come to life.
"Paradise" is a beautiful novel by Nobel Prize winner Abdulrazak Gurnah that takes place in 20th century East Africa.
As some of you know, where possible, I try to work with English teachers to present topics/themes in an interdisciplinary format to enhance student learning. Ms. Gionti (an amazing English and AP English Literature teacher) contacted me about the book early this summer. After reading it, I just knew that it had to be a part of our AP World History curriculum.
The protagonist is Yusuf, a 12-year-old. The novel touches upon the realities of coming of age, societies that require parents to make brutal decisions, and the political/cultural impacts of European imperialism. The students will be reading "Purple Hibiscus," with Ms. Gionti which will provide a much fuller idea of specific African cultures and regions (after all, it's a continent). We thank you for supporting our students' critical thinking skills through this mini-grant.
