Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a low-income/high-poverty school in Los Angeles. At my school, 100% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of them are second language learners. Despite their circumstances, they are eager to learn and discover the world around them.
My students want to become better readers and writers.
They are "the questioners" who always try to discover how the world works. They are inquisitive and always asking questions. They are constantly trying to better their knowledge.
My Project
My students are 5th graders getting ready to go off to middle school, and one of the most difficult things for them is to learn how to organize themselves. I can't tell you how many times they "lost" their writing assignment only to find it shoved in their desk a week later. These binders and dividers will allow my students to create an organizational system for them to use.
This will begin to teach them how to be organized and independent.
As they move on to middle school, they will need to be independent and self-sufficient. That doesn't happen by magic. We spend a lot of time in 5th grade teaching them how to be independent students. These binders will help set them up for success. They will also be using whiteboards to share their thinking in reading and math. I have added some chapter books that my students can use to practice some of their reading skills like theme, character traits, and sequencing.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
