My Students

Each day in our class, we spend time working on career readiness skills. Some of our students have the ability to go off campus and work, others are still in the beginning stages of learning these skills and stay on campus with staff to gain the skills they need to begin employment outside of school

I am a Special Education teacher in a classroom for students with autism.

We are in a low-income school where most students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students families do not have cars at home. It is not likely that their parents would arrange transportation for them to get to and from jobs. That is why we work on this at the school. We are able to teach them the fundamental skills of employment in a hands-on way, that they would not get else where.

My Project

Many of our students are going off-campus and doing work for local businesses. In some of the offices that our students work for they are asked to do many tasks, such as shredding important documents. There are boxes and boxes of papers that need to be shredded at our school, so I had an idea. What better way to prepare our on-campus workers than to have them shred at school under close supervision? With the donation of this shredder, our students will have the opportunity to learn this skill in the classroom before heading off-campus.

Having the opportunity for students to learn different job skills under staff supervision is crucial to their future success.

It is comforting to know that when leaving high school our students will have skills they need to be employable individuals. Our students having jobs, no matter how small, is important in making their lives meaningful. It gives them a sense of pride and accountability that could not be taught otherwise.
