My Students
Were you one of those kids who had to carry tons of books home? Did you do your homework and lose it? Did you find yourself with so many loose papers that you didn't know which was which? Was your desk full of things from weeks ago?
My students are bright and willing to work hard.
They all have different goals, but one of the most common goals is to succeed in 5th grade. They love to participate in school functions, and put on "Pumpkin Bowling" during our Fall Festival. The students in this class are creative, and love to act out scenes from life, movies or books we are reading. My class consists of 14 boys and 5 girls, which makes an interesting mix. We love to play review games, and always find time to study or read on our class couch.
My Project
As of now, my students have weekly packets that include the work they need for the week as well as what they need for homework. This system is difficult to master in 5th grade, as it requires one thing to go everywhere with them. They can't crumple it, spill things on it, or lose it. This packet alone is hindering some students' success.
I decided it would be better to make class workbooks. Each student brought in 4 binders and one ream of paper. So far I have been able to make the math workbooks, which is working wonders. Part way through, I ran out of copy paper. I need to make 10 more science workbooks, 19 reading workbooks, and 19 Language Arts workbooks. In this system, the students use their workbook for that period, remove the paper they need for homework (which they place in their homework folder) and leave the binder in school. This means there is less to lose, ruin, and to carry around.
We have run out of paper, and I am unable to continue to make the workbooks without it.
All of our games and manipulatives are on the floor as we lack a bookshelf, now that the binders are on the shelves. Please help my class to be organized and to succeed by providing us with much needed paper and a bookshelf. We would be so appreciative.
