Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This proposal requests funding for a range of papier-mâché supplies—including gels, flours, glues, and essential tools—to support a student art unit focused on figurative sculpture and cultural representation. While figurative art is a well-established genre in art history, many of my students feel that traditional sculptures often fail to reflect their own stories and voices. With these materials, students will learn foundational papier-mâché techniques, study influential artists like Alexander Calder, Celia Smith, and Robin Wright, and research significant figures from their own lives and cultures. They will create original sculptures that celebrate these individuals, using art as a powerful tool for storytelling and identity affirmation. Beyond technical skills, students will gain cultural awareness, research abilities, and increased confidence in expressing their personal narratives. The project will culminate in a student-led gallery showcase where their work and artist statements will be shared, celebrating creativity, identity, and representation. Funding this proposal will provide students with the means to create meaningful art that honors their experiences while developing vital artistic and life skills.
