it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever been in the middle of working on an art project and realized that your students have run out of supplies? Imagine not having the resources to create artwork without them! My students need paper, Velcro and tape to use everyday, but our school does not have the funds to buy them.
I am the art specialist in a K-5 Arts school.
We are located in one of the poorest rural areas of the state. Our families are plagued by poverty and high unemployment rates. I see about 975 students every week, from kindergarten though grade five. All of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The student population is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian, and 1% Asian. About 70% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language.
My Project
I am requesting paper, tape and Velcro. We are in need of lots of paper to aid in our student's exploration in creativity. I currently have about 1,100 students a week , we need a lot of paper everyday! An average class has about 50 students so a pack of 50 sheets of paper is gone in a flash! I am also requesting tape and Velcro. We use tape almost on a daily basis to hang artwork and repair ripped paper. Lastly, the Velcro will be used attach artwork to the walls so it can be displayed around the school.
In a time of budget cuts, the arts are the last priority for funding.
However, it is more important than ever to make sure our children are well-rounded individuals. These materials will help my students grow not only in art class but also increase their creative skills. Creativity is one of the highest forms of thinking and yet it seems to be disappearing from our schools. Please donate whatever you can for these deserving students and help them have an enjoyable art experience!
