This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school and my students come from economically marginalized communities and many have weak educational backgrounds. All of my students come to school eager to learn something new every day even if the teenager in them cannot demonstrate the emotion. My students have many personal challenges that make school and the requirements of school particularly daunting. That said, all of my students are held to the highest of expectations, both intellectual and professional.

My students are inquisitive and curious about other cultures.

Many of my students live very insular lives even though they live in NYC. While my students are exposed to other peoples and cultures, that contact is superficial. In my Social Studies classroom, units are anchored in geography, driven by primary sources and analyzed through complex secondary sources. Social Studies is the perfect vehicle to teach history, inculcate professionalism and cultural capital to society's most marginalized students.

My Project

We have been informed that our school budget has been cut by $160,000. Instead of losing staff, we are losing all extemporaneous supplies. Each teacher was allocated five reams of paper, but as a Social Studies teacher, without a class-set of textbooks, I must photocopy a lot of readings for the kids. The reality of global warming weighs on us so we have requested the recycled paper. That said, it is imperative that my students be able to deeply annotate their readings and have them at home for homework and studying. As with all furniture, eventually, things fall apart. We are also requesting a filing cabinet for the student's content research files so that all readings/research can be organized and have a designated space.

This week my students are reading and editing primary source readings from the Byzantine Empire (Justinian and Theodora were quite a couple).

My students must deeply annotate the reading first identifying key vocabulary terms and concepts. Then students must write their understanding of the readings in the margins. Lastly, the students take their notes and form a Harvard outline of the readings/texts. Those readings will then be put in our research file cabinet for future reference and next year.

The paper supply will ensure that all of my students have the readings/tests/quizzes that they need for a successful year. As a Title I school, we also have a significant number of students that must take their Regents exams multiple times before successfully passing them. I use paper to make copies of the Global and US Regents exams so that students can accurately test prep. All test preparatory materials also get filed away for future use. Your support and generosity will allow my students to work without interruption for the rest of the year.
