This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a third grade teacher at a Title I inner city public school that is a part of a low income/high poverty school district. A full 100% of the students at my school are economically disadvantaged. My class includes 32 diverse students whose learning styles and abilities vary greatly. It is a challenge to find resources within a financially struggling school district to ensure positive, academic development for all of my students.
Attending school in an underfunded school district combined with living in poverty increases obstacles to learning for my students.
These circumstances are beyond their control. Despite their struggles, they come to school every day excited to be there and ready to learn. They are all creative and curious, and they demonstrate persistence regularly. Seeing them work so hard each day motivates me to seek out the best opportunities for them to achieve academic success.
My Project
Due to lack of funds in my school district, each teacher is only given a limited supply of copy paper. Copy paper is used in so many different ways for my students, from printing out weekly homework calendars, class worksheets, tests, differentiated learning actives and creative craft projects, there are so many different purposes copy paper serves that allows me to provide learning opportunities for my students. At this point in the year, I am very low on paper. I've recently had to skip a lot of activities that I wanted to prepare for my students in fear that I will not have enough paper later on to print out mandatory paper work for the rest of the year. This limits me to provide the best learning opportunities for my students, which is not fair for them.
Establishing a culture for learning is a critical component of a well functioning classroom.
One thing that helps to establish this is displaying student's work. In order to continue to do this, my students need copy paper, construction paper and pencils. These materials will allow them to continue completing creative and colorful work to display through out our classroom!
