My Students
My students live in a rural fishing village in Alaska. They are Yup'ik natives (the largest native tribe in Alaska) and their families survive on subsistence living--hunting and gathering. The culture of fishing changes with the seasons, from salmon to trout to herring to smelts.
Like most villages in Alaska, there is a high rate of alcohol and substance abuse.
Suicide attempts are common. The literacy rate is low and most kindergarten students begin school 2 years behind the norm in terms of their readiness for school. The drop-out rate is high.
My Project
Despite the computer revolution, paper is still an essential part of the student's notebooks and other supplies which will help them organize their homework. My students live in a rural Alaska area. Most are unable to purchase school supplies because of poverty.
Poverty should not be a barrier to good education.
Basic school supplies, such as a binder, pencils, paper, and an organizer can be seen by some as minimal. Yet their absence can be a sad impediment to a good education. Thanks to your generosity, these items can play an important role as my students learn the important good study habits and other important skills.
