Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The First graders in our urban Title I school come from all sorts of backgrounds. One thing they do have in common is that they are active little ones who use fine motor skills in school when they write and draw. The ones who are more comfortable doing these things have more resources free to focus on classroom lessons.
It is much easier to learn letters, numbers, and another language if they don't have to devote effort to the process of writing those letters, characters and numbers down.
This year, our district is placing a focus on visual arts. We need various art supplies to plan meaningful, standards based, developmentally appropriate instructions, while addressing the fine motor needs of the youngsters.
My Project
Students will use the punched out shapes and decorative papers to create individualized family trees and family collages. They will print out family members' photos on the photo papers to be displayed on the trees. In our Mandarin Dual Language Program class, students will also write the Chinese names and titles for each of their nuclear and extended family members (self, mom, dad, siblings, grandparents) on the family tree and collage projects. At the end of these projects, students will make an oral presentation and a written essay to show case their creation.
Combining art and target language into a presentational form gives meaning and pride to this exciting journey of merging
