My school is a consolidated school district that covers small, rural communities, and quiet farms. Some of my students travel long distances to school; others live right down the street.
My students are athletes and scholars.
In a small school, students have opportunity to try new skills without tremendous pressure. They multitask. They have big hearts and want to help others. They like to try new things.
My students are quixotic. They want to understand and influence the world around them, while at the same time staying close to home and the surroundings that make sense to them.
My Project
Two huge benefits of learning math include learning to think strategically and logically and learning how to communicate what you know. In my classroom, we do several activities that develop these skills. Often students are called upon to take a complex problem, work it out in steps, then make a poster that shows how they did each part of the problem.
Having the tools they need makes it easier to complete the task!
In order to make posters, we need poster paper that is plentiful and sticks to the wall easily. The self-stick easel pad makes this part of the process much simpler.
Another activity we do in my classroom involves my printing various components of a problem (graphs, tables, equations, models) on different colors of paper, cutting them out, and having students match graphs with tables and equations, etc. This activity forces them to make connections between the various representations of a function. I use a lot of colored paper in my 6 classes.
FInally, to develop organization skills, I have my students keep a binder with assignments, tests, notes, and other items in it. It would be so much easier for them to stay organized if I had a three-whole punch and stapler in my classroom.
I have also requested pencil lead. My students use a lot of it, and it is nice to have some on-hand for when they run out!
