Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our small school is located in New York. We are a small school housed within a campus of many small schools. As we service students primarily from the surrounding neighborhood, our students represent a multicuturally diverse and disadvantaged urban population.

All of our students are recent immigrants to the United States and therefore face an up-hill struggle not only to learn the subject matter, but also to acclimate to a new culture and language.

Such a population may have difficulty with the complex concepts associated with science. In order to overcome the language barrier, we use art projects to engage and enrich the learning experience in the field of science. These disciplines are a natural pairing. Both call upon a students' ability to make observations and create models and drawings to represent the world around them. If students are engaged and are active participants in their classes, they learn better. Art also taps into one of the ways students learn best. I believe that I can better service my students and help them understand science concepts in greater depth if I can reach them using multiple teaching strategies and tools.

My Project

Learning comes in many forms. Often my students can not find the proper English words to demonstrate what they have learned, or their understanding of science concepts. With the use of easel chart paper, and the ability to transform my blackboard into a "whiteboard", my students will be able to express their thoughts and learning into colorful diagrams and displays. Access to assorted colorful dry erase markers will bring life and vibrancy to my students' work.

Please help me help those most in need.

Your act of kindness and generosity will have a long lasting impact on our students. Help me make learning fun and engaging. Thank you for your generosity.
