Our student book club boasts over 50 members. Our Book club meets monthly, and it is a time when kids with varying family situations, sexual identities, ethnicities, and religious backgrounds gather together around a book (and some light refreshments) to talk about how their differing life experiences influenced their understanding of the work.
The truth is this: students need access to books that help them develop empathy and engage in difficult conversations with open minds and civil language.
The beautiful thing about book club is that these students go on to have conversations with their peers, families, and teachers about the books that they’ve read, which inspires others to read and discuss these books. These books have an influence far beyond our club's membership. We also loan the sets of books out to other libraries so they can use these diverse and inclusive titles with their students.
