Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I want my students to make dramatic growth in reading, meaning many students must gain grow over one full grade level. Providing my students opportunities to read, retell and reflect on robust texts is my biggest challenge.
I work with students in second through sixth grade.
Many of my students are English language learners and some of my students have learning disabilities in reading. The students live and learn in a dual language culture. Each grade level at my school has one dual language classroom - half the day in Spanish, half the day in English. My students who are not in dual langue classrooms often learn from an English-speaking teacher, then go home to Spanish-speaking households. My students thirst for robust texts they can connect with as well as texts that take them on journeys far outside of our Phoenix community.
My Project
Students will use the headphones and microphones during daily guided reading and independent reading times in their classrooms. During the reading block, students break into small groups, which work with me, their general education teacher or in a reading center. The microphones with headphones will allow students to listen to stories, providing a model fluent reader, as well as record and review their own reading of the stories. Students will also use the headphones with microphones in order to monitor reading fluency and comprehension progress through running records. Every 3-6 weeks, students will record a passage at their instructional level, record a retell of that passage, and take a comprehension quiz. Students will also use the headphones and microphones during daily guided reading
This year, Arizona students in third grade who are falling far below grade level expectations will be retained.
Donations will ensure my students do not fail. Retention has shown to be very difficult for young students, often resulting in increased placement in special education, repeated retention and lowered rates of academic achievement. This project will ensure my third graders are not retained and my students who have yet to enter third grade will not be at risk for retention.
