This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title I elementary school teaching second grade. My students come from various backgrounds and are at a wide range of different reading levels. Some students come to school ready to learn, and I have others who come to school prepared to be loved. They are a unique bunch of kids and are sweet. I anticipate that this year will be a great year full of many adventures and lots of growth!

Sometimes teaching is not just about academics, and the teachers at my school know this daily.

For some children, the classroom teacher is their only form of stability and love in their lives, and academics may not be a priority for them.

Daily, I worry about whether the kids are learning and how some students are doing emotionally. Some of my students in second grade have seen much more in their lives than some people have ever seen. Giving the students a place to feel safe and loved is just as important to me as giving them a place to learn.

My Project

My students are having a tough time dealing with some of their big emotions. They haven't been in a classroom setting for a year and a half due to the pandemic. They are just too young to understand all of the feelings that they are feeling or even why they are feeling them. I want to help them through literature and group discussions on how to handle and describe the "big" emotions that they are going through. I want them to be successful academically as well as mentally/emotionally. If children are having a hard time with their emotions and feelings, it blocks and hinders their ability to learn. I want all my students to feel good and focus on their learning, not just in my class but in the years to come. Once they can identify their feelings and learn how to deal with them, then academic learning can begin. The Monsters Books series will be used to enhance a significant writing project that we will be doing. I wanted to gift a "monster" book to each of my students at the end of the writing project. Something they can call their own and take home. The erasers and expo markers are items that are well used and well worn at this point. I have borrowed from other teachers and would like to pay them back for their students and have ones for my students.
