This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have new writing standards for the '10-'11 school year. New standards require that students "with guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including with collaboration from peers." A digital camera is a tool that can help make this happen.

I teach first grade in an inner city TITLE I school.

The students are so eager to learn!! Many of my students are English Language Learners. Pictures and photographs help them to immediately understand what a word means. Their desire to read and write is contagious! They are always willing to help each other.

My Project

Our class needs a digital camera for several reasons. As stated, we need to meet new writing standards that include using digital equipment. One of our first writing assignments is a personal narrative. Unfortunately, many students have limited experiences outside of the class trips that we take. The camera could be used to take pictures on a class trip to inspire writing! It could also be used to illustrate a memory picture book that the children write later in the year. We take neighborhood walks as part of our social studies and science curriculum. Again, photographs from these outings could be used in their published writing that goes into their portfolio.

This project is important because photographs from neighborhood walks, class trips and special events (such as a special assembly or visitor) can be used as a catalyst to inspire young writers.

The photos can be used to illustrate students' writing to meet current standards. Education budgets have been cut to the lowest level ever! Without your help, this digital equipment will not be possible.
