My Students
At our school our students come from all over the world. They each bring their own unique talents and experiences to the classroom and are incredibly excited about learning.
They are full of energy and enthusiasm and are beginning to come together to support one another!
They are passionate and love learning! As we read stories, they are constantly examining the illustrations and making observations that they are eager to share with one another. They are always asking questions, wondering why things work the way they do, or how things come about. They love working together with one another and encouraging each other to become leaders!
My Project
For the past several years we have taken the day before winter break to learn the beauty and tranquility that come from cozying up with a good book! Traditionally we have called this day "Pajama Hot Cocoa Read Aloud Day" and have spent the morning reading books, doing crafts, and then watching the movie that accompanies the book! This day has been a great way to celebrate all of our hard work during the first half of the school year, while also building a positive culture around reading!
We know that our parents are our students' most powerful resource and want to empower them to create a positive culture around reading at home!
In addition to creating a positive culture around reading with our students, we also invite parents in for this day, for a reading workshop, and an opportunity to practice the skills from the workshop!
These materials will support our parent workshop, and provide them with opportunities to practice literacy at home. The cookie mix and cookie cutters will be given to parents as raffle prizes. Throughout the workshop we will show parents how simple activities like baking can be used to support students as both readers and writers! The cozy socks will also be raffle prizes given to parents as a way to build a culture of cozying up to read!
Hopefully through this family engagement day, both students and parents will head into winter break ready to read!
