Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We started our organic garden a few years ago with 3 beds. Now we have 17. My students work with the general education population to learn from it daily, and we do learn so much! It is an awesome teaching experience and it provides so much for them.

I teach a special education class and my students need to learn about nutrition and cooking, along with science, nature, and social skills.

We can incorporate all this and more into our garden at school. We have grown lettuce, spinach, strawberries, corn, radishes, onions, garlic, and so much more. We have also had the opportunity to give back to our community by donating food from our garden to a local food bank, which gives our students a chance to participate in something that teaches them that they can also participate in service on a personal level where they otherwise may not have an opportunity to do so. Our garden also gives us an opportunity to interact with the general education population at our school, promoting friendships and thriving relationships that are lasting and conducive to the understanding of diversity. Unfortunately, California is in the midst of the worst drought we have experienced in recorded history, so we need help in efficiently watering our garden.

My Project

My students will be able to understand how a watering system will more efficiently feed our plants in our garden when it is more effective to water and better for the environment. We will learn how to best use water during our drought and give enough water to maintain our garden using a watering system on a timer. Up until this year, my students have been watering the garden at school, and although it has been fun, it has not been the most efficient way to water, nor has it been the more effective use of water during the drought. We need to be able to utilize our water during the early morning hours when the garden is able to absorb the most water.

My students will be able to learn about efficiency of water use, how not to waste water, and the best way to maintain a garden.

The best way to show students is by example, and this will be an excellent way for them to see how well the garden is doing with a watering system. I will be able to set up a recording device so they can see the garden being watered "by itself" when they are home sleeping.
