Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are an urban high school that has a lack of necessary materials and resources for our students to thrive. Our neighborhood is high poverty and we are considered to be one of the most challenging schools in our area. We have serious attendance problems and many students who are not engaged in learning.
I have taught here for eighteen years and enjoy the creative spirit of my students.
Over the years, I have had the pleasure of seeing my students discover talents they never knew they had. I strive to expose them to as many diversified, artistic experiences as I can.
In our present situation of teaching with a hybrid model, all of my students are working on their laptops. This is challenging for everyone and has changed our way of learning. We have started an after school club with a small group of students who are able to participate in hands-on activities.
My Project
I would like to provide students with a fun after school, and virtual, art activity. Students are missing many of their after school activities due to Covid-19 restrictions. We are on a hybrid schedule so we can have some students in the room and some virtual participating in a painting workshop. It would be along the lines of a Paint & Sip event with students painting while they sip on their juices which I will provide along with a snack. Students in the room will be limited according to social distancing guidelines. Students at home will join their art teachers over TEAMs and be guided through the painting exercise. This will be fun for all of us and bring back a sense of normalcy for the students.
