Painting Portraits Are EduTainment

My students need acrylic paint, brushes and canvas boards.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Hill's classroom raised $516

This project is fully funded

I'm the visual arts teacher at a Title I elementary school Washington, DC. I currently teach visual arts to over 400 students in grades ranging from Head Start (two-year-olds) to 5th grade (twelve-year-olds). I have been teaching in the same school for the past eight years.

What art classroom do you know of that does not have a sufficient amount of supplies? Many times by the end of the school year all of the supplies are gone. Unlike other classes paint, paper, canvas are consumables and once they are used by students they are gone. It becomes very difficult to reuse canvas and paint once it has been used. The fourth graders have been working on portraits for most of the school year and as the year comes to a close the students have asked if they can paint, I have not yet answered their request because telling students no is the hardest thing to do as a teacher.

In doing portraits thus far, we have used tempera paint, crayon, pastels, pencils and even created them out of cut paper to form collages. But one material that has escaped us is acrylic paint. At the elementary level I have attempted to introduce my students to as many types of materials as possible to create the same work of art. By using various materials the students have first hand opportunities to see what effects that one medium has over another. Paint always seems to come out as the one medium the students most clearly relate to when it comes to art, more specifically portraiture. What are the portraits made of that are at the gallery? Paint. The use of Paint is truly “EduTainment” a mix of entertainment and education. While they most certainly will benefit from the educational aspects that using paint will show, it is also entertaining to use. I am asking for tempera paint, brushes and canvas... in hopes for these painting to one day hang in the Louvre.

By no means am I suggesting that I have the next Leonardo in my classroom, and by this one painting activity his talents will be discovered; but why can't I believe that I do and let their creativity grow? As a proven advocate for the educational process of all students, your help will ensure the continued and enhanced arts in education. What they get out of fourth grade will stay with them for years. Research has shown that the impact of the arts in education contributes to the development of the whole child, and with your help together we will provide the resources to make this happen.
