FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Borock's classroom raised $757
This project is fully funded
Tucked away in the Fordham-Tremont section of the Bronx, in a Title One school in which 98% of the population is below poverty level, on the third floor of a non-air conditioned building that is well over one hundred years old, is a rather messy room with a hot-water-only sink. This is where I play host to 125 kindergarten through third grade students each day. (Yes, that's 625 artists each week!). Before coming to our school, most of these 1250 young hands have never held a paintbrush, so the idea of putting vivid, wet, paint onto clean white paper is for many the highlight of their week.
Since it is nearly impossible for me to single-handedly manage the clean-up and maintenance of materials within the mere five minutes between classes, my dilemma of messy and thrilling vs. clean and easy persists.
All of this is to say that I am reaching out for donations of low-maintenance, quality art materials that will hold up under extremely high usage, yet be fairly easy to collect, clean up, and redistribute in five short minutes. The addition of these materials, interspersed with traditional paints, will allow me to alternate between mega- and mini- clean-ups between classes.
Specifically, I am requesting 15 sets of Caran D'ache watercolor crayons, geometric foam shapes for math-oriented collage projects,a few gallon-sized bottles of Aleen's Tacky Glue, 15 sets of standard color opaque paint pens, and 15 sets each of Crayola Gel Markers and Overwriters. These materials would allow me to provide our students with exciting new mediums to work with, as I develop the art curriculum to enhance classroom literacy, social studies, science, and math content areas. Students spend so much of their lives in school, learning to write about everything, seemingly as if lined paper was the only venue to record history, communicate ideas, demonstrate passions and fears, pay homage to nature, reflect society and culture, and share observations. Some of us, like Picasso, use other means. If children are to learn to look at life with a critical eye, we must allow them to experience art, and provide them with the necessary materials.
