I am a 1st year teacher in an underserved elementary school in the south side of Chicago, where I teach art to over 800 students a week. The grade levels range from pre-K to 8th grade. My students are very excited to paint, and I would love for all of them to produce creative and thoughtful watercolor, tempera, and acrylic paintings this year. However, to make that a reality we need a painting drying rack in my class.
In one day, I see about 150 students. If they were each to work on a single painting, there would be no space in the room to put them all to dry. Stacking paintings on top of another will make them stick and impossible to separate. Drying racks can also be use for printmaking projects that use ink to print relief or ?collographs.?
I would work with the primary grades to produce fall leaf plants, and with upper grades, I would love to make cardboard collographs. With the cardboard method, a collage of different textures and materials can be arranged on a plate to create unique, tactile compositions.
Painting, a traditional art form, and Collagraphy, an expressive collage medium, make for distinct explorations of material, form, and content in art-making. Even if we use wet ink on paper, a place for the work to dry becomes necessary. Please accept this application for a drying rack purchase and know that it will benefit an entire school of eager and creative children. Thank you for your time.
