My Students
My students are creative problem solvers and enthusiastic learners. They live and learn in a New York City Pre-Kindergarten to 5th-grade school. They come from a diverse community with a wonderful variety of cultural backgrounds and languages (Chinese, Russian, Albanian, Italian, and mandarin ). More than half of the students come from low-income households, and many of them are part of military families. More than half of the students are English Language Learners. Many families endured Hurricane Sandy and are still recovering from the devastation that the storm left. They are hard-working and full of inspiration and an eagerness to create.
Art is a language we can all speak and working in a group creates a strong community.
They just need the tools to create.
My Project
Painting expresses our thoughts feelings and imagination.
My students are very creative.
These supplies will enable them to do more than think about art. They will allow then to create art, to see themselves as the creative wonderful young artists they are.
We will be studying modern artists and masters. We will see different painting styles and learn new techniques to apply paint as well as color theory. We will study the history of portraits as we create bold student-driven paintings. My students will learn to turn any mistakes into art and embrace creative problem solving and learn protocols for critique.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
