My Students
Our students are behaviorally challenged, at-risk youth, many of whom have spent very little time in any sort of typical classroom. Our school is a behavior school, meaning we are the institution where students go after being suspended, expelled, or otherwise removed from a traditional school setting before either getting their act together or committing acts egregious enough to land them in jail.
Something in their lives has gone horribly wrong; now they're not only paying for it but trying to learn something new to keep themselves from returning to the juvenile justice system.
These students are still at the early stages of the game where they haven't given up hope for the future. Thus, they see each opportunity to learn a new skill as something that could help turn their lives around.
My Project
Our students have been learning about creating artworks that study mankind's exploration using a comic book approach. They're ready to create a sailing adventure scene with paint. We'll use the inspiration taken from Marvel Comics and they'll paint their own interpretation or what exploration must've been like with adventures and travel of a more primitive age.
Acrylic paints will be used to create an exploration and travel adventure scene to better understand the "Age of Sail."
We'll preserve these for future classes, on tabletops under a clear fiberglass resin.
