My Students

"There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun."-Picasso This project will add a splash of color and promote the importance of environmental education in our literacy garden.

I teach 22 curious, natural born third grade scientists in a small Title I school with approximately 350 students and an amazing and supportive principal.

My students are eager to learn and their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them. Everything is a potential investigation/experiment to them so I strive to provide my students with as many learning and project based opportunities as possible. I enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more by infusing STEAM correlations (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Science) whenever possible. Because of our size, funding levels are not as high as other schools that have larger enrollments, so grants become an integral part of how I obtain materials to supplement learning experiences. I truly believe that the future lies in our children, that they have virtually unlimited potential, and my job is to enable them to reach it.

My Project

My students and I have created a Literacy Garden, where they plant and cultivate seeds. The space is an extension of our classroom where students conduct research, observe the animals that visit the garden and go when they want a quiet place to read and reflect. This project request will allow us to get advise and expertise from an amazing muralist, who will not only help my students paint a mural for our garden, but will also teach them about the environment and love for nature, while they learn painting techniques and strategies.

This project will turn a blank wall into a learning opportunity.

As students draw, paint and learn about nature they will also develop a love of art and an appreciation for the world around them. What better way to "Teach for the Planet"! My students will leave a legacy of science and art that classrooms will enjoy for years to come.
