In a typical, elementary art classroom you will find tempera paint and watercolor cakes. These paints are great for certain things. For instance, watercolor cakes work great for painting in a coloring book. Tempera paint is great for painting posters. Neither is good for learning how to paint!
My students come from low-income homes.
This impacts their background knowledge and the types of experiences they have access to. They enjoy art, especially painting. It is calming and soothing to them. It is a great outlet for their emotions. Its good for their fine motor skills. This is something that all 600 of my students in grades 2-5 generally need to build.
My Project
My students need paint and paintbrushes so that they can learn how to paint. The tempera and watercolor that we have access to is not good for learning the fine art of painting. Acrylic is a great paint to learn to paint with and can lead the way for young artists to discover other media as well. Acrylic is a gateway media! These students deserve to experience painting with better quality paint.
This project is so important because I believe that my students deserve to have this experience.
I want them to have access to high-quality art materials so that they can be inspired!
