My Students

My school district doesn't provide art supplies beyond pencils and notebook paper. It is very difficult to incorporate art lessons when materials are so hard to come by. These materials will provide my students with a chance to use materials that are generally thought of as reserved for professional artists.

Our school is in a small town in Northern California.

Our ethnic and economic makeup is extremely diverse with students from all over the globe. Whenever I get a chance to take my students on field trips, docents and tour guides always comment on how nice and respectful our students are compared to their peers from other schools. They are the kind of kids who volunteer to stay after school to work on school projects or study for a test.

My Project

Very little inspires students more than a chance to use the materials that professionals use. In an effort to expose them to artistic mediums they may otherwise never get a chance to use, I have chosen the following items: -A class set of brushes of various sizes and shapes to give students options when creating texture and design elements in the painting. -Two 12 color sets of acrylic paint. I decided on more colors of less volume to give students more choices when working with color and mood. -A class set of 12x16 pre-stretched canvas to give students a different surface than they are accustomed to and one that is permanent and durable. Students will use these materials to choose one of the periods in the life of Pablo Picasso and recreate the elements he used during that period to tell a story from their own life.

This project will enable my students to create something that they will be able to keep for the rest of their lives.

In this day of solely concentrating on tested subjects, it is important to expose students to other areas where they can build their imaginations.
