This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from various social economic backgrounds. They range from low income families to homes where parents are trying their best to raise their children in a neighborhood that has gang related problems daily. There are students that don't have either parent and are either with a foster family or with a relative. Either way, they come to class eager to learn, which is why I wouldn't want anything more but to enhance their excitement for education through games and materials.

My Project

With so much emphasis on reading, writing and math, art has unfortunately taken a back seat. However, students need balance of the arts and academics. Not just to do a craft activity for a holiday coming up, but to learn about artists and to use various art media. What is wonderful about art is you can incorporate art with other academics. This is where STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) comes into play. STEAM is an innovative approach for integrating all subject matters.

Art is not a subject that has to be taught on its own.

Students can practice their reading comprehension while learning about the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Math can be taught using symmetry and geometric designs. As you can see, art should not take a back seat, but should be taught along side all academic subjects. Therefore, I am asking for glue, tissue paper, construction paper, poster paper, paint and markers. These are all necessary tools that artist need to create and express themselves, which is what my students need.
