Help me give my students books from all genres to read and cherish. Students should have high quality reading material that they are interested in reading to continue their love of reading.
RHE is a Title I school in a small, rural community where many students have limited access to books they truly want to read at home, especially over the summer. Reading has a profound impact on student learning, yet disparities in access to high-quality, engaging books contribute to gaps in reading achievement between lower- and higher-income students. Research shows that book ownership plays a crucial role in fostering a child’s identity as a reader (Miller & Sharp, 2018). To develop lifelong reading habits, students need a diverse selection of books that reflect their identities, interests, and the broader world.
Providing students with high-quality, engaging books is the first step in encouraging summer reading.
My book list includes graphic novels, a classroom favorite, as well as humorous poetry, biographies of inspiring leaders, fiction stories, and nonfiction books about activism. These selections are designed to captivate students, encourage exploration of different genres, and spark meaningful conversations. When students have access to books they love, they are more likely to read consistently, develop confidence, and strengthen their literacy skills.
My goal is to foster a culture of enthusiastic, self-motivated readers who see books as sources of joy, knowledge, and empowerment. By ensuring that every student has access to books they are excited to read, I hope to bridge the gap in reading opportunities and help them develop habits that will support their lifelong learning.
