This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In this world of replaceable items and video reset buttons, my students are learning that they MUST treat their irreplaceable bodies with respect. As middle-schoolers, they have a difficult time connecting flat paper diagrams to the "real thing".

Our school days are spent in a history filled old school building within an old urban city in Massachusetts.

The mostly minority student-body can unfortunately be characterized as living below the poverty level. They walk to school through some dangerous neighborhoods, yet somehow come ready to learn. The simplest gift (like a snowman pencil) can light up the face of one of my students and motivate them to be inquisitive.

My Project

With so many learning styles in the classroom, every student can benefit from a tactile experience. In our health classroom right now, there is a small torso model with approximately 4 removable organs...and ALL of the kids want her to "sit" with them. They have learned to compare the location of their own lungs with that of the model and now refer to the referenced body parts by the proper anatomical names...MIRACLE!!! By providing the students with a more life-like model which will include a more comprehensive array of anatomical parts, the mode of discovery will virtually take over. This will inspire the students to explore and inquire at a higher level.

The health classroom is an ever-evolving adventure with students as my guide.

As a health teacher, I strive to provide all of my students with relevant and interesting information so that they may take care of their most precious possession: themselves.
