Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend middle school in Norwalk, Connecticut, with over 75% of the school receiving free or reduced-price lunches. Norwalk is an urban area where many of my students live below the poverty level and cannot afford even the basic supplies. My students have a higher need for social-emotional tools to help aid them in coping with school stresses and to become successful in their classes. Our students are creative, innovative, and true consumers of knowledge. As a Gifted and Talented teacher, I work closely with social studies and ELA teachers and am able to infuse this curriculum with topics of diversity, justice, and action. My students are excited about learning and thrive when given the right tools to succeed.
My students love to read books but many have little or no access to books.
The books they do have access to do not represent them or their cultural background. Without this essential piece, students lack the ability to feel they belong. They are really excited about learning and thrive when given the appropriate tools.
My Project
My students come from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Last year I started to build a culturally diverse library that reflects my students. Continuing to build this classroom library with books that reflect these diverse identities will not only excite my students but will open their eyes to the diversity of others around them. These books will help them learn about activism and a variety of perspectives from Native Americans to Pakistan to the Asian experience. It is important to help build their empathy and compassion through exposure to diverse worlds and beliefs. Help my students to not only feel like they belong but to also broaden their own perspectives by giving them books and stories to read.
