Page Turners Book Club

My students need book club books and a paperback book rack to organize and display them.

My Students

Do you remember your first Chapter Book? Students are ready and eager to put "baby" books behind them and start on big kid chapter books. Starting with a series is good because once they understand the basic structure and characters, it is easier to get into the story.

My students are in a high poverty urban school in Maryland.

About 97% of our students receive Free or Reduced Meals (FARMS). About 20% are coming to us through the refugee center. They have many and varied educational experiences depending on the culture they had to flee from.

My Project

Page Turners Book Club Members will have their own organized spinning display from which to choose their weekly book. This should add to how special book club makes them feel. During lunch students will learn about leadership, group norms and dynamics, and most importantly how to talk about books. The Junie B Page Turner also talks about character. The Magic Tree House Club includes a passport to adventures.

Page Turners allows members to take the lead on a rotation, this helps to build leadership.

The leader decides what the BOOK BUZZ for the day will be such as: Who is the most important character and why? What is the setting and why is it important to the book? What questions would you ask the author if you could?Page Turners also sets an example for other students to push their reading skills so that they will be READY for chapter books!
