My Students

We are starting our third year teaching together in a 3rd grade ICT classroom. Many students in our class have learning and attentional challenges. Because of that, it is tricky for those students to simply watch a video and/or respond to prompts in writing. Our NYC public school has moved to a blended learning environment in which students will spend 67% of school days learning remotely. This year, more than ever, we have to be creative in how we encourage our students to engage with the curriculum and with each other. We try our best to make sure every student has equal opportunities to discover a love of learning.

Our students are unique, inquisitive, compassionate, and creative with a variety of academic needs and learning styles.

Our students come from culturally diverse backgrounds. Our students get especially excited when they can explore the classroom, taking time to notice all the materials with which they will embark on their 3rd grade adventures. We are trying to generate similar excitement for the digital resources and tools we plan to use to engage students remotely.

My Project

We are about to embark on an unprecedented year in education! Students will meet their new teachers and a few classmates in person, but will engage with most of their classmates completely remotely. It can be challenging to make connections and build a community through a screen.

Padlet is an incredible virtual platform that allows students to communicate and collaborate in a meaningful way.

It can help us develop some of the community and interaction students are missing in a remote learning environment. One way we can use a Padlet is to pose a question or topic. Then, students are met with an interface that is super user-friendly. The interface gives students much needed choice in how they communicate their response. A response might include a photo, drawing, video, or even a google slideshow. Giving students a choice in how they respond ensures that all students have the opportunity to participate, regardless of their academic needs or learning styles.

Across Padlet, my students can also collaborate, share ideas, and give feedback to classmates. Padlet is simple, effective, and most importantly, fun!
