Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students in grades 9 and 10 live in an extremely impoverished area in the 4th largest school district in the United States. Many of the students are homeless due to single parent households and the rising housing costs making it difficult for their parents to afford housing and food. My fellow teachers and myself joined forces to feed the students throughout the day and school year. I have created a small food pantry in my classroom closet that has snacks, water, and juices that allows students to choose whatever they need to eat. I am asking for assistance in continuing to stock snacks for the remainder of the school year.
Nutrition plays a vital role in sustaining life and providing snacks to homeless students allows them to concentrate and focus on learning instead of the rumble in their stomachs.
Students can come anytime and use the password so they can request a snack without judgement which lessens any embarrassment they may have.
More than half of students from low‑income households
