Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our middle school students are deeply interested in learning and will make a difference in communities they represent. They want to stand out, do well in school, and feel that they are well respected. Current events baffle them in a world where they want justice for the innocent and hope as they are not the next victims in a world of chaos. My middle school students are not the statistics you read and hear about in the media. Despite ongoing violence in and around Chicago, my students participate in kindness challenges, tutor younger grade students, and assist teachers during their recess.
Much attention has focused on the academic loss as a result of Covid-19 school closures.
However, it is impossible to expect teaching and learning to occur without attending to our students' daily social and emotional learning and health needs. This lack interferes with their learning and ability to be the leaders we desperately need in our society.
My Project
A lack of basic needs of clothing and food has a direct and negative impact on students' attendance, social emotional growth and academic achievement. These take home, or come to school ready to learn basic humanitarian items of food (Dole fruit bowls, potato chips, fruit juices, soup, breakfast biscuits, oatmeal and pop tarts. ) clothing (gloves, and hats) and hygiene items such sanitary needs and face coverings, will encourage my students to see school as a safe and nurturing place where their academic, social and personal needs are met and that people are concerned about them. My middle school students aren't shy about their needs and share them often. Because basic needs such as hunger aren't always clear cut, I plan to have an open pantry in one of my closets where students can take food or clothing they need. It is difficult for those who don't get their basic needs met to reach their learning goals.
