Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach high school English in a high need community. At our Title 1 school, almost all of our students qualify for free lunch due to low income. Many of our students are immigrants or the children of immigrants, and our population is 85% Hispanic.

Most of my students are wary of poetry. There is a lot of poetry in their textbooks but much of it they cannot relate to. I want to show them that they can enjoy poetry, and relate to it, and maybe even write some of their own!

Therefore, I would like to have some poetry books by Pablo Neruda in my classroom. Neruda, a Chilean who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, is one of my favorite poets. I believe that the students will benefit from his poetry because he primarily writes love poetry and sonnets, and teenagers, of course, can relate to the anguish and joy of love. Neruda's poems, originally written in Spanish, are available in English. I would like copies of his poems in both languages, which will be especially powerful for my students who are English Language Learners, and whose first language is Spanish.

You will make it possible for my students to learn that poetry is beautiful, accessible and enjoyable. I hope that reading poetry that transcends language will empower them to be better students, writers and thinkers. Thank you!
