My students need more chances to explore with popular book titles and themes. They need opportunities to work together in class and at recess. Having an organized classroom with useful and lasting tools will foster growth.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten at an elementary school in San Diego, CA. We are a Title I school with low income students, primarily with a Latino population. I have 23 students with 15 boys and 8 girls. Some students have had preschool and some have not. Many students come into Kindergarten not knowing any letters. My job is to get them to recognize and write 26 uppercase and lowercase letters. In addition, they need to learn the sounds for each letter. After that, we begin the task of blending the letters to read and write words. Besides this, each student is expected to recognize and work with numbers up to 30. We are very busy indeed!
My Project
Engagement with materials is important. Selecting book titles and activities that will foster positive interactions with others is critical to the development of their social and emotional needs. In literacy, books with engaging characters or that contribute to a specific theme help students feel connected. In Social Studies, using models, like the globe, and non fiction texts can elevate their understanding. Community helpers can seem abstract to Kinders, but providing finger puppets of each version will illuminate the real life versions. Science concepts, like Push and Pull, come to life with real world applications that they can relate to. In addition, our classroom could benefit from an organizational lift by providing matching but colorful tools, such as book boxes and pencil cases. Labeling and laminating items with corresponding names helps foster literacy and clarifies where things belong.
