Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My high school students are artists, activists, and change-makers. They are inquisitive and eager to learn. At our school, we focus on the growth of the whole child, and this is what makes us special. My students create end-of-term projects that reflect college and career readiness as opposed to a series of standardized exams. Our community engages in Restorative Justice practices, and the students are leaders in facilitating this.
Above all, at our small public school, we are a family no matter what because we are always trying to create safe spaces for each other.
While communication between us is important, we also acknowledge our physical space is, too. My students understand that comfort is central to building safe spaces, and they are eager to help create these spaces any chance they get.
My Project
Our school building is old. Over the summer, we are remodeling some of the most dire spaces of the building. Unfortunately that does not include all of our classroom bulletin boards, white boards, and walls. In my classroom, there are two old chalkboards that were painted over long ago, and I have since been unable to use it in any convenient or meaningful way. It is deteriorated and beat up; it feels neglected from old age, and is sad to look at.
There is a saying in education that goes, "Posters are the silent teachers." In our classroom, every inch of space is necessary.
These unusable walls make it difficult to display student work, and thus, make our room less of a home that reflects my students' learning. With the help of new cork boards, I can seamlessly create a safer space for my students to learn in; having new cork boards will also make it easier for my students to decorate and proudly display their hard work!
