OWLS Notebook--Improving Parent-Teacher Communication
My students need binders, colored folders, colored paper, page protectors, and binder pockets to create OWLS notebooks to improve parent-student-teacher communication.
My first graders are excited to learn and come bustling into the classroom. With the goal of conquering all the first grade objectives, I want my students to learn organization skills and the importance of sharing their learning with their parents.
My first graders come from a variety of backgrounds in an urban setting.
In general, my students have had limited exposure to reading and writing, so school is really "new" to them when they come to me, with not all children attending kindergarten. Our K-8 school works hard to support the youth in this low-income neighborhood offering various programs to help students maintain their educational goals.
My Project
Each student will set up a notebook to keep all their school work in. The three ring binder will serve as the notebook. Each student will have a different colored folder to keep work from their academics--reading, writing, math, science, and other. The page protectors will store projects. Students will orally share their learning via their notebooks--not only with me and their peers, but also with their parents. Their decorated notebooks are displayed, with each student having easy access to his/her notebook anytime they want. The OWL notebook is our way of staying organized at home and at school. It is a 3-ring 1" binder that contains valuable information that is always at our fingertips. Its handy sections provide a quick and easy way to organize notes from school, graded papers, homework, newsletters, lunch money, word wall words, reading logs, schedules, and contact information to name a few things. Thus student, parents and teacher stay informed.
The OWLS Notebook will be used by students to stay organized with the goal of success in learning.
The OWLS notebook will also be used to maintain a constant communication with parents, so they will know how to best support their children. Plus, students will have several opportunities to orally share their work in their notebooks throughout the school year.
